Doreen Hughes, the widow of John (Jack) Everitt of 2nd platoon 9th Field Coy (Airborne) RE passed away on 23rd April 2019.

A chance encounter by John & Sandra Ferry while based in BAOR led to identify the the lady who had been planting a ‘poppy cross’ on the grave of Jack Everitt. John met with Doreen and took this photo as she tended Jack’s final resting place. The ‘red beret’ and helmet adorning his gravestone were provided by John. Doreen had, over many years, made an annual pilgrimage to Jack’s grave.

12 years ago she had requested to be added to the mailing list of the AEA journal, and a detailed account of her dedication to her husband was published in an earlier edition of our magazine.

We extend sincere belated condolences to her family and friends.

They shall grow not old
as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them
