Airborne Engineers Association

Roll of Honour

John (Mick) Weddell

After a short illness, Mick passed away on the 10th September 2000 aged 77. Mick joined 3rd Para Sqn in 1944, and served a unique nine years with Airborne Engineers during it's title change from 3rd Para — 3rd Airborne, 9th Independent Airborne to the present 9th Parachute Squadron. His service took him to Europe (B.L.A.) 1944/46, on to Palestine 46/47 and finally the UK for a short break. 1948/49 saw the squadron in B.A.O.R. (Neumunster, Hameln) then back to Aldershot. June 1951 off to Cyprus then on to Moascar in the Suez Canal Zone, where Mick was then a Cpl welder/blacksmith in the Park Troop.

On leaving the service Mick rejoined his father in the family smithy - cum agricultural engineering business at Ayton near Berwick-On-Tweed. Fittingly a Para Padre conducted Mick's funeral service and the ceremony was well attended by his family and friends, which included George Wilson (ex 3rd Para), and some younger members of our Association, Bill Holmes and Ken Tealey. All who knew him in the Airborne Engineers will fondly remember Mick.

Our sincere condolences are extended to Betty, his wife of 32 years, his three daughters and their families.
